This course blends traditional journalism with the rapidly evolving the field of broadcast journalism. Students will explore advanced elements of television production. This course will include all the mechanics of video production including directing, script writing, reporting, camera techniques and digital video editing. Heavy emphasis will be on script and narration writing. Students will research, gather, and analyze information to create video productions. Those enrolled will film school activities, learn techniques in audio and video recording, and will become proficient in the state of the art video technology. Students will get experience on camera and behind the scenes of PTV. The newscast is broadcast to the school and to the entire town of Plymouth. Students will also be required to do outside of school videotaping of events.

Topics Covered

Directing

Each student will act as a director, visualizing the script while controlling the artistic aspect of the piece.

Producing

The students are taught the many roles of a producer in regard to teh pre-production planning process.

Videography

The students are taught the importance of visual composition when framing their shots.

Audio

The students are taught the importance of audio in video and how to use a number of microphones.

Editing

The students are taught the video editing process of piecing together a news segment.

Interviewing

The students are taught how to deliver compelling questions in interviews to further craft their news segment.

Scriptwriting

Each student is tasked with writing intros, outros, questions, and voice overs for their news pieces.

Hosting

Each student is given the opportunity to practice their on camera skills by hosting news segments.
